The New Instagram Algorithm

Instagram rolled out a new algorithm to combat spam by businesses and users alike. The giant social network has been toughening up on bots as well as likes/follow apps recently and you may have found that the new changes to the algorithm have affected your engagement levels. Many users have reported a drop in engagement such as likes and comments, with some users now finding themselves ‘shadow banned’ which basically means their posts do not appear in the hashtag areas so they’re not easy to discover. The changes are set to nudge Instagram users in the right direction, and Instagram wants to promote healthy real engagement rather than bots and tools, so we may just see a lot of users behaving a little differently on Instagram over the next few months, to stay in the app’s good books. Instagram also wants to promote their own advertising tools, but some say the money spent does not provide much of a return on engagement.
